UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR on the RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
CONSULTATION at the ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE CENTER

APRIL 28, 2012 1:00PM to 5:00PM

The United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Professor S. James Anaya, will hold consultations at the ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE CENTER with representatives of tribal governments, village & regional corporations, and other Alaska Native organizations as a part of his official visit to the United States on the afternoon of APRIL 28, 2012 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. This Consultation is being co-hosted by the Native Village of Eklutna and the Inuit Circumpolar Council. Consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, topics of this consultation will include but not be limited to:

The right of self-determination and self-government

Tribal governance; determining political status; structures; decision-making; institution building; political representation; use and authority over lands, territories & resources

The right to freely pursue economic, social, and cultural development

Food security; language; culture; education; and child welfare

-The right to determine priorities for development

Barriers to economic development; sustainable & equitable development

Other issues relevant to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Rights to lands, territories and resources; non-discrimination; free, prior & informed consent

Representatives of Indigenous governments, peoples, and organizations interested in being placed on the Speaker’s list are invited to register by April 25, 2012 via email at unsralaska@gci.net . Please note the topic that you would like to address, your name, and organization or entity. Those who have common concerns are encouraged to coordinate their remarks in advance and to make joint interventions to the Special Rapporteur.

In addition, because of the limited timeframe of the Consultation, the Special Rapporteur may not be able to hear from all those that register. However, written information can be submitted to the Special Rapporteur at indigenous@ohchr.org.
