Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Indigenous Rights

wipologoOn 3 February 2014, the Special Rapporteur gave the keynote speech at the indigenous panel entitled “Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources: What is at Stake for Indigenous Peoples?“, which commenced the 26th session of the World Intellectual Property Organization Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore. In his statement, the Special Rapporteur provided an overview of the human rights principles regarding indigenous peoples that should guide the Intergovernmental Committee as it undertakes negotiations on the development an international legal instrument for the protection of traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources. Professor Anaya also offered comments on the Consolidated Document Relating to Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources (WIPO/GRTKF/IC/26/4), being discussed during the session.
